Netflix Challenge Day 23 - Robocop

 photo Robocop_zpsee07416d.jpg

A monolithic corporation controlling a futuristic, crime-riddled Detroit transforms a dead cop into a cybernetic law-enforcement unit called RoboCop.

In a near future version of Detroit, Omni Consumer Products (OCP) takes over the running of the police force to try and save the city from destroying itself. OCP are planning to demolish Detroit and rebuild it as some sort of utopia called Delta City. To counter act the rising crime OCP start running tests on robotic law enforcement and during a presentation by senior president, Dick Jones his robot called ED-209 malfunctions and guns someone down. The OCP Chairman worries that it could cost them over $50 million and agrees on an alternative cyborg project that was brought forward by Bob Morton, Morton tells him it's called the "Robocop" project.

I just loved Robocop, I remember watching it as a child (yea I ws a bit too young to see it) and used to watch it all the time I even had some Robocop toys.

Yea at time the acting and some of the sound effects are a bit cheesy but that's what you get with a 80's action film. Some of the special effects do look a little bit dated but they are still better then some films that have been coming out over the last few years.

The Robocop series went on for a total of 3 films (a reboot is being made), 2 different TV series, 2 separate cartoons (which was aimed at kids), video games, comics and toys. So its safe to say that even tho the films were only really for adults the rest were watchable by kids.

So nearly 30 years after this came out it's still a great watch.

Netflix Challenge Day 22 - Snatch

 photo Snatch_zps2c19d523.jpg

A gangster transporting a stolen gem inadvertently triggers a slew of events that wends through the worlds of bookies, bare-knuckle boxing and swine.

A gang disguised as Orthodox Jewish men pull off a diamond heist where they get away with a  84-carat diamond, Franky "Four-Fingers" makes off to London to sell the jewel to Doug "The Head" on behalf of his cousin "Cousin Avi". Just after the heist he is advised that while in London he is to obtain a gun from Boris "The Blade".....but what he didn't know is that the rest of the gang and Boris are working together and plan on stealing the Diamond from him.

Going off at the same time is small time boxing promoter Turkish and his friend Tommy who convince gangster "Brick Top" to add a unlicensed boxing match featuring "Gorgeous George" to the bets at Brick Top's bookies. Tommy is sent to get a new caravan from a a bunch of Pikeys, they are ripped off and George gets into a fight with Mickey O'Neil who just happens to a bare-knuckle boxing champion, George gets seriously hurt and can not fight in the unlicensed match so Turkish convinces Mickey to replace George in the up coming match on one condition, they buy his mum a new caravan. Brick Top goes ahead with it but wants Mickey to take a fall in the 4th round. Do you think a Pikey will do that willingly?

This is the second British gangster film by Guy Ritchie (The first was Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) and to be fair it's just like the first one and follows the same ideas and even features many of the same actors.

Snatch has everything you could need from action to comedy and a little bit of thriller thrown in for good measure. The choice of music fits perfectly, the actors do a great job and the direction is spot on.

The only problem I have with it is the man who plays Brick Top, Alan Ford. All he ever seems to play is angry Cockney bloke and for a change he will play angry shouty Cockney bloke.

Obviously Snatch is a must if you enjoy Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels but is recommend it if you also enjoy the latest slew of British films.

Netflix Challenge Day 21 - Saw VI

 photo SawVI_zps724ae21c.jpg

Agent Strahm is long gone, and Detective Hoffman is now the heir to Jigsaw's terrifying legacy. Meanwhile, FBI Agent Erickson is hot on his trail.

Saw VI follows the progression of the Jigsaw Killer's successor Mark Hoffman as he continues Jigsaw's work and sets a series of traps for insurance executive William Easton and his employee's at an insurance firm. The FBI are looking into Peter Strahm as they think he is Jigsaw's last accomplice and now Hoffman must work fast to cover his tracks.

This is the 6th film in the very successful franchise but was also the least profitable of the film series but was still a big success next to its small budget.

Now I will hold my hand up and admit that I am a massive fan of the films. I love the way the films over lap one another at various places and how they keep you guessing. At times the gore in these films can be a bit too much for most and the "traps" can be rather gruesome at times.

For me the music is a big part of these films. Charlie Clouser did the score and it fits the films perfectly. I became a fan of his work through my love of Nine Inch Nails.

If you have a strong stomach and don't mind seeing blood and gore then this is for you.

Netflix Challenge Day 20 - The Stepfather

 photo TheStepfather_zpsd74a4d63.jpg

A series of mysterious events makes a teenager suspect that his mother's new boyfriend may be a dangerous serial killer known for preying on families.

As it starts we are shown a man in a bathroom shaving and dying his hair but then he puts in different colour contact lenses. It cuts and shows various family members scattered around the house......dead. He casually goes down stairs makes some peanut butter on toast and leaves.
Months later and he is in a supermarket and talks to a woman and her kids about how its a woman's world and they should let their mum decide which cookies to buy, they talk and he mentions she is divorced and he says he lost his wife and daughter the year before. As he is putting the shopping in the car the woman introduces herself as Susan Harding and the man says he is called David Harris and invited him to come for pizza with her and the kids.

It jumps again and Susan and David and engaged, Susan's eldest son Michael is coming home from military school and meeting 'David' for the first time. Things are tense for a bit but they all start getting along. Things heat up when Michael starts getting suspicious after David gets the name of his dead daughter wrong and the nosey cat lady neighbour talks to Susan saying that she was watching Americas Most Wanted and a sketch of a serial killer looks just like David.......it's safe to say that David does not waste time sorting that out.

The suspicions mount up when David randomly quits his job to avoid giving I.D and his stories start to not add up.

I had no idea that this was a remake of the 1987 film with the same name but now that means I have to go out and try to find a copy of that one to watch.

I love watching films like this and trying to figure out how people will find out the truth and enjoying the slip ups the killer tends to make and this one kept me guessing.

The Stepfather is a thoroughly enjoyable thriller, I didn't find any problems with the acting or directing or sound what so ever.

In a way this film reminded me of the new wave of thrillers/horrors that kicked off with the first Scream film and maybe that's why I enjoyed it so damn much.

I would recommend this film for fans of Scream.

Netflix Challenge Day 19 - Bad Boys

 photo BadBoys_zpsd59aa756.jpg

In this fast-paced actioner, two Miami narcotics cops are hot on the trail of a master crook who has snatched $100 million worth of heroin.

Two narcotics cops working for the Miami PD are put back on their biggest case after $100 million worth of high grade heroin is stolen from right under the Police Department's nose. Internal affairs are on their back as they believe it must of been an inside job. They have less then a week to get it back before the narcotics department is closed down.

This film was picked by the misses Emily (She runs a Beauty Blog and a Book Blog) because she wanted to pick film to watch so I loaded up Netflix and let her pick away and was shocked that she picked this as she tends to go for Disney films and soppy romances. I will also hold up my hands and admit that I have never seen Bad Boys before

Bad Boys is a typical buddy cop style film, 2 partners from different backgrounds and a boss that just shouts all the time. It's all here even the expensive car.

I thought the film was flawless but with 1 little problem, Téa Leoni's acting made me cringe.

Bad Boys is 2 hours long but doesn't feel like it at all, its really easy to watch and enjoyable to boot.  This is a must for any buddy cop film.

Sorry guys but due to family circumstances there is no Netflix Challenge today. Things should all be back to normal tomorrow.

Netflix Challenge Day 18 - Insidious

 photo Insidious_zpse57fd72b.jpg

Hoping to leave their haunted house behind, a suburban family moves to a new place, only to learn the home wasn't haunted... but their eldest son is.

Renai and Josh Lambert have just moved into a new area with their 3 young children, while looking through some pictures Dalton wondered where they are no pictures of Josh when he was a kid and Renai just shrugs it off and thinks that Josh must of been camera shy as a child.

Dalton is playing and hears a noise in the attic, he goes up to see what it is and falls and hurts himself but can not take his eyes off the darkness in the corner, he goes to bed just like normal but does not wake up in the morning and is rushed to the hospital where they find he is in a coma. 3 months later he comes home but still in a coma and the family are taught how to look after him.

And this is where the weird stuff happens from hearing voices over the baby monitor to figures behind the curtains. They think the house is haunted but is it the house or is it something else?

I felt that Insidious was a breath of fresh air after all the cookie cutter horror films we have been having over the last few years. (Countless found footage films and run of the mill slashers). It uses sudden noises and shadowy figures to make you wonder if you saw it or not.

I do feel that it could of been allot more if only it had be given a larger budget but they did an amazing job with what they got. The special effects are flawless the sound is spot on and I can not find any faults with the acting what so ever.

Keen eyes would spot Billy (Puppet from SAW) with a number 8 under it drawn on a blackboard.....hint towards a 8th Saw film?

If you are wanting a good old fashion scare then Insidious is for you.

Netflix Challenge Day 17 - The Mighty Boosh

 photo TheMightyBoosh_zpsc2e87329.jpg

Vince and Howard, employees of a zoo run by the maniacal Bob Fossil, enjoy surreal adventures with an ape named Bollo and other odd characters.

The Mighty Boosh follows the strange and bizarre adventures of Vince Noir and Howard Moon as they get themselves into weirder and weirder situations with their friends Bollo the ape and Naboo the Shaman.

Vince's main love apart from himself is fashion all be it a some what outlandish fashion sense going from Jacobean ruff's to drainpipe trousers made out of bamboo! Howard is a simple man with simple tastes, he loves Jazz and dressing like a supply teacher.
The story's are out there with Vince turning punk and eating one of Howard's rare Jazz records and infecting himself with a Jazz virus and then goes to Howard having to go toe to toe with a Kangaroo in a boxing match.

The show can be quite random at times but that's a good thing because just as you are settling in to a story then WHAM the moon comes in with to say something that doesn't have anything to do with the story. They sing little ditty's they call Crimping.

Soup Soup
Tasty Soup Soup
Spicy carrot and corriander
Chilli chowder
Crouton Crouton
Crunch friends in a liquid broth
I am gespatchio Oh!
I am a summer soup Mmmm!
Miso Miso
Fighting in the dojo
Miso Miso
Oriental Prince in the land of soup

The crimps have got quite a cult following  and were even copied by a cereal manufacturer.

The show started off as a radio show then spawned into 3 series that follow them as they go from working and living in a Zoo in series 1 to moving into a flat with Bollo and Naboo in series 2 then end up working in Naboo's shop in series 3. It also had 2 live tours.

To wrap it all up the show can be a bit random at times and it's not really for everyone because you either love it or hate it......I am one of the many who love it.

The Mighty Boosh is for fans of shows like The I.T Crowd.

Lomography Fisheye Baby 110 Basic

 photo FisheyeBaby1_zps5c34ab08.jpg

Before I start with the review I just want to say that yes my blog is called The DIGITAL Bites but I have a new found love for lo-fi photography and this is the first of hopefully many cameras to come.

This is a review of the Lomography Fisheye 110 Basic, it's a smaller pocket version of Lomography's Fisheye No.2 and as the name says packs a fisheye lens and view finder. A lot of cameras like this would get called toy cameras due to their size and styling as well as plastic cameras because they are made of plastic and/or have a plastic lens.

 photo FisheyeBaby2_zps7acc4a71.jpg

No I am not a giant, the camera really is that small! But as they say the best things come in small packages.

It takes 110 film that was discontinued in 2009 but Lomography started making their own in 2012.They first did the Orca Black and White 100 ISO (the film I used) and have brought out the Colour Tiger 200 ISO, Peacock 200 ISO and Lobster Redscale 200 ISO.

I am a total photography novice but found it really easy to use, just look through the viewfinder and click, it really is that simple. If you are in a low light situation you can change the shutter to stay open as long as you hold the button down and doing so will help more light get in which boots the brightness of the picture but be careful as it can over expose but then again that's what some people want so play away.

Getting the 110 film developed was not as hard as I thought it would be, you can send it off to Lomography for them to do it but you can also find people local to you who can do it. I went to my local Max Spielmann and they could do it but had to send it off, it did take just over 2 weeks to get the pictures but I did send it off just before a bank holiday so that set back the return date.

 photo Freshny_zps5e4b2621.jpg

 photo View_zpsb0c71c25.jpg

 photo Anchor_zps866e54b5.jpg

As you can see it is great for pictures when you are out and about and I was lucky because he had some amazing weather for me to test it out.

 photo Emily_zpsae8bb4e1.jpg

 photo Livvy_zps4afaf762.jpg

 photo Meg_zpsb621c9fe.jpg

The above pictures show you what I feel the camera is made for, getting timeless pictures of friends and family that you can not get with digital cameras.

The white around the pictures is from when I scanned them using a all in one scanner and printer but Lomography sell the DigitaLIZA 35mm Scanning Mask which you can also use to scan your 110 film negatives but you can also buy dedicated film scanners that takes 110 as well as 120 and even 35 film.

I think it is safe to say that I have caught the Lomography bug and have a long list of cameras I want (more like need) and will be getting over the next year or so. I think this camera would be perfect for a young child to use as they wouldn't spend their time setting up the picture, they are impulsive and will just look and shoot and that is something I need to learn how to do.

Netflix Challenge Day 16 - Crowsnest

 photo CrowsNest_zps179be493.jpg

When five friends disappear during a road trip, police discover videos that graphically detail their bizarre and horrific experiences.

One summer a group of 5 friends go on a trip to celebrate a birthday but get lost in the back roads and end up having a bit of trouble with someone behind the wheel of a big campervan. The film reveals footage filmed by the friends that shows the brutality of the locals who are not pleased with the outsiders coming into their land.

As you can tell this is one of the many "found footage" films that has been coming out over the last few years and sadly it fails to bring anything new. It feel like a drag to watch as it takes about 30 mins for anything to start happening and when it does it's just a dire excuse for a car chase. 45 mins in and it starts to pick up but it still feels like a drag to watch.

The acting mainly consists of the women screaming and the men shouting/whispering telling them to shut up. The special effects are just as good as the acting.......in other words they are totally rubbish. I only watched this to the end as it's part of my challenge otherwise I would of turned it off after 30 mins.

This is where I would recommend this for fans of certain films but I wont. It's just that bad.

Netflix Challenge Day 15 - Super Size Me

 photo SuperSizeMe_zpsea487dfb.jpg

Director Morgan Spurlock takes a hilarious and often terrifying look at the effects of fast food on the human body, using himself as a guinea pig.

Super Size Me follows director Morgan Spurlock as he challenges himself to eat nothing but McDonalds for 30 days. He has to eat everything on the menu at least once and if offered super size he has to accept.

He started off with perfect health, blood pressure, weight, and BMI were all within the healthy range during the experiment he documents all of them with regular checkups with 3 different doctors.

Just 2 days in and he has some trouble, his diet was really healthy but the challenge is taking its toll as he gets his first super size and he literally can not stomach it. The fat and salt was just too much for him and 22 mins after eating he is sick.

Between the shots of him eating they show interviews with specialists and art work of evil Ronald McDonald's as well as mention other fast food franchises and the effects they are having on the American population.

You feel guilty when it shows you what the school children have for their dinners with choices from the likes of piles of chips and cheese burgers to cookies and fizzy drinks.

I love the way that Morgan Spurlock does his films as he does not push his views on you and more of less helps guide you to make your own decision unlike other film makers *COUGH* Nick Broomfield *COUGH*

Since Super Size Me has been out McDonalds have stopped doing super size and now have all the nutritional value of the foods on the trays although some would say that this is not linked to the film what so ever ;)

Netflix Challenge Day 14 - Bottom

 photo Bottom-Season1_zpse1f2e939.jpg

Two crude, perverted lunatics with no jobs, very little money and only a filthy flat spend their aimless days scheming to score cash or girls.

No real plot to Bottom as it just follows Richard Richard (Richie) and Edward Elizabeth Hitler (Eddie) as they stumble through life trying to pull and make money in any way what so ever. Richie is a simple man who just wants to loose his virginity to anything (and I mean anything!) where as Eddie is an alcoholic nutter who will drink anything he can get his hands on then pass out.

They have 2 friends (well I say they do I mean Eddie does) Dave Hedgehog and Spud Gun who are almost as bad as they are, none of them have jobs and want to get as much as they can for free. They often go to the local pub but always get into trouble be it while trying to chat up women or with the landlord.

The show ran for 3 series and even spawned 5 live shows and a film. All of them have worked well through the years and have not gone out of fashion and have even got new fans from the younger generations.

If you are wanting some intelligent comedy then this is not for you at all, it is filled with dick and fart jokes and the odd finger being cut off. You can easily pop this on and laugh from start to finish.

Highly recommended for anyone who loves good ole British humour.

Netflix Challenge Day 13 - Evil Aliens

 photo EvilAliens_zpse7a67572.jpg

Desperate to save her job, a TV host hires actors to stage an alien abduction on a remote island. All goes well ... until real aliens show up!

On a small remote Welsh island a young couple are abducted. The boy is brutally murdered where as the girl (Cat) is impregnated with an alien foetus. The story grabs the attention of Michelle "Foxy" Fox who hosts a TV show called Weird Worlde and her crew. They set out with a UFO expert and 2 actors to interview Cat and film a reenactment but get caught up in a whole world of weirdness.

Now I will admit that I picked this film because I had a little crush on Emily Booth when she used to host BITS (A UK video game show hosted by 3 women) and I love British horrors. Now don't go into watching this expecting to see  Oscar winning acting because you wont but that is part of the charm of films like these so yea the acting is B list (that is a good thing) but I was taken back with the special effects.....they are quite good and they mix computer animated and prosthetics really well.

Fans of cult British films/shows will love seeing Norman Lovett (Holly from Red Dwarf) in a totally different character and will you sport the poster from Razor Blade Smile (director Jake West's first film)

This film is a must for fans slapstick/horror films like Evil Dead.

Netflix Challenge Day 12 - Human Centipede: First Sequence

 photo human_centipede_xlg_zps6eed5445.jpg

After their car breaks down while in Germany, two American women wind up at a remote villa and soon find themselves trapped in a nightmare.

2 American girls (Lindsay and Jenny) are on a tour of Europe and find themselves in Germany for a few days. They call for directions to a nightclub but get lost on the way and end up with a flat tire just outside villa. They wake up in a make shift hospital and find out that them and another man are to be surgically attached mouth to anus and share single digestive system.

Now I don't know if it is just me being used to seeing these kinds of films but I didn't think it was as bad as everyone made out. Yea the idea of what the doctor does is the shocking part when when it's done you don't really see anything.

I only really watched this to see if it is as bad as everyone made out but it did not live up to the hype what so ever. The story was boring and the characters were your normal run of the mill horror types. It even had a stupidly stereotypical German doctor.

Only watch this film if you are intrigued about the rumours you have heard and if you are into trashy torture porn films like the Hostel series.

Netflix Challenge Day 11 - Grown Ups

 photo GrownUps_zps3073dc31.jpg

Five childhood pals reunite after 30 years at a lake house to mourn the loss of their old basketball coach, and act quite juvenile for their age.

A group of 5 childhood friends are the only team to ever win under coach Buzzer. Jump 30 years and they are all grown up with families of their own. Lenny Feder is now a talent agent and married to a Roxanne Chase who is a fashion designer, they have 3 kids. Eric Lamons off is married to Sally and seems to think he is the manager of the store he works in they have 2 kids (Sally still breasts feeds the youngest). Kurt McKenzie is married to Deanne (Kurt is a house husband and Deanne is the worker). Rob Hilliard is married to a woman 30 years older then him (she is his 4th wife) and last but not least is Marcus Higgins who is a lazy jobless womaniser.

They all find out that the coach has passed away and attend the funeral where they all meet up for the first time in years and that is where the shenanigans start with the name calling to start with but when they get to the lake house a whole host of pranks and tricks kick off. Arrow roulette anyone?

I only really wanted to watch this as I saw the trailer for Grown Ups 2 and couldn't stop laughing while watching it. Grown Up really is a feel good movie for all ages even if it does have some moments the younger ones will question.

If you want a film where you don't have to think much and want a laugh every 10 mins then get this on.

Flashback Friday - Super Smash TV

 photo SmashTVTitle_zps374d3877.jpg

Super Smash TV is a SNES home console port of the 1990 arcade game Smash TV. The arcade game was controlled via 2 sticks where as the SNES version uses the d-pad to control direction and the X, B, Y, A to fire up, down, left and right respectively.

The game is set in far and distant year of 1999(notice the sarcasm)and takes place in a Running Man style gameshow with smiling host that pops up on screen to say lines like "Total Carnage! I love it!", "dude!" and "I'd buy that for a dollar!", the last one is taken directly from Robocop from a very similar TV comic called Bixby Snyder.

 photo SmashTVBoss_zpsc4ceaafd.jpg

At times the gameplay can get quite hectic at times with constant streams of enemies coming from the 4 doors in each room and to survive you will need to make use of the many powerups that come on scree. The powerups range from extra weapons and go to shields and drones that fly around you and fire the same weapon as you.

If you are wanting to play Smash TV without having to buy a old console you can pick up a copy of Midway Arcade Treasures for PC, Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox. There was even a version for the Xbox Live Arcade but was taken down in 2010.

I really enjoyed playing it again, I was taken back by just how difficult it was but then again I do tend to find the older games are more difficult then the latest games. I do wish I had another pad so I could get Emily to play it with me as this is where the game excels with you fighting over the pickups. Yea the graphics are dated but you will get that from a game that is over 20 years old!

One big problem with playing this is that it is making me want to get more of the older consoles and games to go with them but space and money are a bit of a problem with that. Retro gaming can be quite an expensive bug to catch!

Netflix Challenge Day 10 - Life On Mars

 photo life_on_mars_zpsf631e85f.jpg

DCI Sam Tyler is thrust from 2006 to 1973 after an accident. As he continues to work cases, Sam struggles with the notion of traveling through time.

Sam Tyler is a DCI with the Greater Manchester Police, after being hit by a car in 2006 he wakes up to find himself on some wasteland in 1973 but finds himself working from the same police station but with the lower rank of DI, his DCI being Gene Hunt.

This TV show was spread over 2 series and follows Sam as he tries to figure out how and why he woken up in 70's Manchester while trying to get his head around the alien world of policing in the 70's. He teams up with Chris Skelton (he is treated like the tea lady, sent on little jobs and the tea boy), Ray Carling (loves the way Gene works but hates Sam) and Annie Cartwright (a Woman Police Constable) as he tries to piece together whats happening.

Sam gets visions and hears voices that hint towards him being in hospital in a deep coma and giving him hints about how to survive this predicament. He often says things that the people around him don't understand like computers and when they are a job in a factory he says that he lives there (in 2006). They often look at him like he has lost the plot and quite frankly I don't blame them.

Life On Mars is full of pop culture references from Rainbow through to the music of David Bowie. There are a few mistakes easiest to spot was the use of PVC windows but that's just me nit picking.

This show is extremely enjoyable and you can easily find yourself watching all the episodes in one go just to see how it turns out. If you do enjoy this show then please watch Ashes To Ashes which continues the story in the 80's but avoid the US remake at all costs, not only is it bad but they rushed it and changed the ending.

Netflix Challenge Day 9 - Jackass 3.5

 photo Jackass35_zps5268ba5b.jpg

This hilarious documentary finds the Jackass crew testing the limits of decorum with dangerous stuff they couldn't squeeze into the previous movie.

This post will be a bit short then the other as there is no plat what so ever but what do you expect from the Jackass guys? Jackass 3.5 is a cross between a behind the sceens documentary and all the extra shots they couldn't fit in Jackass 3D (You can tell why some of the shots didnt get in but the rest are really funny).

In a nutshell they go around the world and meet up with The Dudesons and Streetbike Tommy from Nitro Circus and have the time of their lives doing what they love most.......pranks and stunts.

One of the best parts of the film are when they show footage filmed with a Phantom Camera, now this may be the immature child in my but I couldn't help but laugh out loud when I saw a closeup of Weeman's scrotum being hit by a tennis ball in slow motion.

So if you are a fan of Jackass, Dirty Sanchez and people getting hurt in bizarre and funny ways then get the drinks in, get your friends round and get this on!

Dead Space

 photo DeadSpace_zps86511231.jpg

Dead Space came out in 2008 and is a third-person sci-fi survival horror from EA Games.

Plot
The year is 2508 and you are Engineer Isaac Clarke who is part of the crew along with Commander Zach Hammond and Computer Specialist Kendra Daniels onboard the USG Kellion sent to investigate the distress signal sent out from the USG Ishimura during it's mining operation on the planet Aegis VII. Something goes wrong while docking and the Kellion only just manages to dock with the Ishimura but when they start to investigate they are attacked by vile creatures called Necromorphs and Issac is split from the rest of the team. Zach and Kendra manage to get away but find out that most of the ships vital systems are down and they need Issac to get them up and running again.

Gameplay
The game is played with a over the shoulder third person and omits the use of a 'normal' HUD to show health and ammo and instead shows the health as a bar down Issac's spine and the ammo can be seen on the weapon you are using. Maps, inventory and video calls are done through a unique holographic style display that projects in front of Issac's face from a device on his chest. You can gain access to computer operated stores which you use to buy and sell items to help further the game. You can also use Benches to help upgrade Issac's gear (boost health, weapon damage etc) through the use of "Power Nodes" which you either find or buy from the stores.

Combat
In Dead Space combat is a little bit different then other games as it uses something they call "strategic dismemberment" which is where the player kills the Necromorphs my removing their limbs as shooting them in the head has little effect. By removing the limbs the Necromorphs can change the way they move and attack and even go as far as sprouting other creatures to attack Issac. With Issac being an engineer the weapons he has access to are not the normal guns and lasers and are more like the tools of his trade.
  • Plasma Cutter
  • Rotary Saw
  • Hydrazine Torch
  • High-Energy Contact Beam
  • Force Cannon
Each weapon also has a secondary firing mode for example you can rotate the plasma cutter 90 degrees which helps with the "strategic dismemberment". To survive you need to scavenge ammunition and health packs as well as other items which are found randomly about the ship as well as from fallen enemies.

Graphics/Sound
This is where the game excels, even now 5 years after the release they still look amazing. What makes them stand out is the use of light and shadows to give you the feeling of safety or fear BUT this is not always the case......in Dead Space you are NEVER safe! The sounds add an extra level to it from Issac's thumping footsteps to the distant scuttering sounds of the Necromorphs as they make their way through the ships vents. A good example is in the video below.

Conclusion
At times I found this game absolutely terrifying, it is like a nightmare fuelled roller coaster and you can not get off. Over all I really enjoyed this game and hope this review will be of use to you. I leave you with a summary of good and bad points.
Good Points
  • Plot/Story
  • Graphics
  • Sound
Bad Points
  • Combat can be a bit hard to follow

Netflix Challenge Day 8 - My Bloody Valentine

Haunted by a massacre that took place years ago, Tom returns to his hometown only to find that a pickax-wielding madman has begun a new killing spree.

A cave-in in a small town mine traps 6 miners, 6 days after the cave-in the rescue team get to the trapped men but find only one alive but unconscious, Harry Warden, he survived by killing the other men with a pickaxe to save the air for him. The mine owners son, Tom Hanniger get the blame for the cave-in because he forgotten to vent the gas lines but.

On Valentine's Day the next year Warden awakens and for some unknown reason decides to kill everyone around him. Sheriff Burke turns up to find body pieces all over and a heart inside a chocolate box.And not for another unknown reason a bunch of teenagers including Hanniger and his girlfriend and friends have decided to throw a party at the old mineshaft. His friends go into the mineshaft but Hanniger hold back a bit and leaves his girlfriend to go get some drinks from his car.

The girlfriend goes in by herself to try and catch up with their friends, she finds someone but the unlucky lad end up with a pickaxe in through the eye. She sees someone in full miners clothing carrying a blood covered pickaxe (Warden) and runs away but is grabbed by one of the friends into a little hide hole, Warden finds them but they make a break for the exit and bump into Hanniger on the way out, Warden goes for Hanniger and hits him with the pickaxe while the friends speed off in the car and leave him behind. He runs back into the mine to get away but as soon as Warden gets the chance to kill him the police turn up and shoot him but Warden gets away through the back of the mine.

I have not really heard much about this film and saw it had a 4/5 rating on Netflix so started watching it with a open mind. Not long after it started I was wishing I never picked it! The way it was filmed gave me the feeling of a low budget B-Movie (I love B-Movies but this was not supposed to look like one) the acting was just dire. I know this was made for 3D and you can tell with some of the shots like the pickaxe through the eye but them shots just looked stupid in 2D.

The story was as easy to read as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, you could just easily tell who was going to be killed off and who was to get the blame.

Now I do love a good Slasher/Serial Killer film but I wish I just avoided this and feel the need to watch another film to make up for having to sit through that!

So if you want to watch a film where you can guess the ending after 20mins then yea waste your time and watch this.

Frankie Go Boom *

 photo FrankieGoBoom_zps4d1998bb.jpg

Frankie Go Boom is a 2012 comedy written and directed by Jordan Roberts and stars Charlie Hunnam, Chris O'Dowd, Lizzy Caplan, Ron Perlman and Chris North.

The film is about Frank (Charlie Hunnam) who spent his entire childhood being embarrassed and humiliated by his older brother Bruce (Chris O'Dowd) while he filmed it. Bruce has just got out of prison/rehab and is getting his life back on track and wants to make amends. Frank literally runs into Lassie (Lizzy Caplan) well when I say runs into her I mean she drunkenly rides her bike into him and crashes into the floor then passes out, Franks decides to do the right thing and looks after her.....one thing leads to another and then end up sleeping together oh and Bruce decides to film it and gives a copy of it to his Jack who is a friend of his from rehab and is some what unhinged.

When Frank finds out about all of this he demands that Bruce gets the DVD back, they go to Jacks to get it back but find out that Lassie is Jacks daughter! Bruce rips the DVD player out and throws it into the pool to stop Jack from seeing it. They go back that night to get the player back but end up nearly killing a pig before waking Jack up and finding out that he has sent the player off to be fixed. Bruce and Frank run off to get the player and end up breaking into a house where they do get it but Bruce ditches Frank leaves him to get arrested and spend the night in jail.

After they get the DVD back Bruce gives it to his friend Claudia(Whitney Cummings) to edit it so they cant tell it's Frank and Lassie, Frank finds out about this and goes after Frank.....Claudia then takes it upon herself to upload the original anyway just to spite them all. Bruce then turns to his transsexual prison buddy Phyllis (Ron Perlman) who just happens to be a top class computer hacker to try and get the video down but can he do it?

I went into watching this film knowing only 2 of the actors,I know O'Dowd from his amazing work in The IT Crowd and Perlam from Hellboy, The City Of Lost Children as well as his countless voice work. I really enjoyed Hunnam and will be keeping an eye out for more of his work.

At times Frankie Go Boom is little bit on the crude side and not for the easily offended but luckily I'm not! The film makes you chuckle through most of it with the bizarre situations and makes you howl with laughter and the WTF moments.

I am shocked at how it managed to sneak by me but I am really glad I have seen it and will be telling people to get it ASAP. You can find it in the DVD section over on Zavvi or just click here for a direct link to the films page.

Netflix Challenge Day 7 - Ghostbusters

 photo Ghostbusters_zpsdd8d7f24.jpg

Parapsychologists create a business exterminating ghouls and hobgoblins -- and end up facing one killer demon in a cellist's apartment.

The film follows three parapsychologists Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz and Egon Spengler as they start off working at a university but get their funding cut just after they have their very first run in with a ghost in the basement on a library.

They talk Ray into selling his family home so they can set up business in an old dilapidated fire station and buy a car.....Ray runs off and spends about $4000 on a car that needs the same amount again to get it ready.

Just as money is getting low a job comes through from a posh and a little bit snooty hotel. The Ghostbusters come rolling up in Ecto-1 (the name of the car) with lights flashing and a siren blaring bringing plenty of attention. They meet the manager in the lobby who tells them about the ghost on the 12th floor (apparently all the old staff know about the 12th floor) and this is where we meet a floating blob of green goo who we all know as Slimer. Slimer attacks Venkman before going through a wall and into a big function room and this is where the Ghostbusters smash everything in sight doing $1000's in damages while catching the ghost and then charge the hotel $5000 for doing it.

They are contacted by Dana Barrett after her eggs decide to pop out their shells and cook on her kitchen counter, she then hears a loud rumbling and growling coming from her fridge, as she opens it all she can see is what looks like a monument with flames around it and some daemon dogs then hears a voice call out Zuul.

Business takes off and they decide to hire a new member of staff so they hire Winston Zeddemore. Zeddemore is only with the Ghostbusters for a few weeks when all hell literally starts to break loose after Barrett gets possessed by Zuul and some stupid jobsworth from the Environmental Protection Agency thinks the Ghostbusters are breaking the law and turns off the power to the containment grid to deactivate it and this is where it all kicks off.

Well I just loved this film, loved it when I was a kid and I still love it. At time the special effects are a little bit dated but over all they are not that bad (Emily was impressed and thought it was from the 90's and not from 84), the costumes really are dated but then again they does happen allot with films from the 80's as its the decade that fashion forgot. The comedy was spot on, no foul language what so ever and the only real violence was towards the ghosts. I can see how this film has stood the test of time and I am shocked that they have not done a 3rd one yet (Ghostbusters 2 came out in 1989), yes I know there are rumours flying around the internet about so called stories and whether or not it's being worked on but all we can do is sit back and wait for it to happen.

If you want to see a good easy to watch family film (maybe not for the really young ones) then you need to get this watched.

Commander Chris Hadfield - Space Oddity

I am sharing this video just to show how amazing this man is. This really is one of the best cover of Space Oddity of all time and what tops it off is it's the first music video to be made in space.

Commander Chris Hadfield I salute you.

Netflix Challenge Day 6 - Rambo

 photo Rambo_zps468506ed.jpg

When governments fail to act on behalf of captive missionaries, ex-Green Beret John James Rambo sets aside his peaceful existence to take action.

Set many years after the original Rambo films we are introduced to a quiet and somber Rambo who is living a nice simple life in the jungles of Thailand. He is approached by some American missionaries who are led by Michael Burnett and Sarah Miller and want to hire him and his boat to take them into the war torn country of Burma to help them take supplies to a village and this is where the problems start. Burma has been a war zone for over 50 years with the Burmese military ruling with an iron fist.

Rambo takes them but is not happy about doing so and keeps asking if they want to go back but they soldier on and he drops them off at the village and they go about their work with medical help etc. It all seems to be going ok till a mortar goes off and the army rolls in with guns blazing and flame throwers burning everything to the ground. The missionaries are captured and taken away and that is when it all starts to happen.

This film does not hold back with showing you the brutality of war and even goes as far as showing children die  by being shot, stabbed and even thrown into a burning house. As you could probably guess the violence has been ramped up to the extreme and shows throats being ripped out and limbs being cut/blown off oh and I cant forget to mention all the people who are shot down.

I went into watching the film from only seeing the older Rambo films and not really knowing much about the character but that was not a problem at all because Stallone has done a superb job of helping you understand the character of Rambo (even tho he doesn't say that much during the film).

Do you like your action films to pull no punches and just take the violence and slap you in the face with it? Well watch this and watch it again!

Patient Zero

 photo PatientZero_zps636e27e3.jpg

'When you have to kill the same terrorist twice in one week, then there's either something wrong with your skills or something wrong with your world.

And there's nothing wrong with my skills.'

Before I start with my review I would just like to say thank to Jonathan Maberry for writing this book (The reason for the thank you will follow). I was on my way to visit my girlfriend at Uni and decided to walk into Waterstones just to see what they had and this was the first book I saw, now I will be honest and admit that I had never heard of Jonathan Maberry before (To be fair I hadn't read a book in years) and I just picked it up because it was about Zombies. To cut a long story short lets just that that I would like to extend my gratitude to Mr Maberry for making me fall in love with books again. Thank you so much.

Patient Zero is the first book in the Joe Ledger series and follows Joe Ledger a Baltimore detective who gets drafted into the Department of Military Sciences (DMS) by the mysterious Mr Church to fight terrorists and zombies that have been created due to a parasite that infects the brain with Prion protein.

The characters are all amazing, Maberry describing them so well you can hear their voices as you read and even understand the reasons why they do the things they do. Description is what Maberry does best, like an artist of words he paints the world for you to picture in your mind and dragging you in and helping you feel like you are fighting along side them. the action is fast paced and brutal at times and just as you think something is about to happen the scene changes (that's a good thing). I worded it as the scene changes because that's how I see these books. To me the short sharp chapters are like scenes in a film, its just perfect for the series.

The violence is on its own level and when reading the battles you can tell that Maberry is a little bit into his martial arts (7th Dan in Jujutsu) with the way he writes about the punches and locks.

If you are wanting a fast paced action filled book that is like a cross between 24 and The Walking dead with a dusting of Rambo then this is for you......if you are not a fan of all that then just read it anyway!

Netflix Challenge Day 5 - Darkness Falls

 photo Darkness-Falls-movie-poster_zps687ba930.jpg

Lynched by an angry mob more than 150 years ago, a falsely accused woman returns as a vindictive ghost dubbed the Tooth Fairy to take revenge.

The films takes place in a small American coastal town called Darkness Falls and begins with the story of an old lonely widow called Matilda Dixon who is loved and adored by the local children as she gives them money and presents as their teeth fall out thus gaining the nickname of "Tooth Fairy" (Tooth Fairy is also one of the few names this was know as during filming.)

A freak fire burns through her house and she suffers extremely severe burns and become rather sensitive to light so she wears a porcelain mask to protect her face and only goes out at night to avoid the pain.

Of cause the parents are really cautious of her because of how close she is to the children but when 2 of them goes missing she is the prime suspect and a lynch mob forms to hunt her down, they find her, tie her up and rip her mask off exposing the sensitive skin to the light and causing extreme pain, as they taunt and abuse her she swears her revenge on the town. Not long after her death the 2 small children are found and that makes the town realise they made a big mistake and they quickly bury Matilda hoping it will cover their tracks and all will be forgotten. Oh how wrong they were!

The film is about Kyle, a young boy who's last baby tooth falls out one night just before his friend Caitlin comes to see him, not long after Caitlin goes he starts hearing a noise and goes to see what it is and bumps into him mum in the hall and tells her about the noise, she goes to check it out in the dark and gets killed by the Tooth Fairy while Kyle hides in the bathroom and survives BUT he gets the blame for her murder. Jump 12 years ahead and Caitlin's younger brother is suffering from nightmares and she calls on Kyle for help and yup, you guessed it, its the Tooth Fairy.

Darkness Falls lends from the most primal of all fears, the fear of the dark, if you are in the dark then she can get you......easy to avoid? Not that easy in a film anyway as things always happen to take out the lights)

Even tho this film was slated by critics it did quite well on cinema and home media release.

Yes the acting might not be the best around and the special effects are not top notch but it does have some decent if typical scares (its quiet, too quiet then BANG!)

This is for fans of films like Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and House Of Wax.

Netflix Challenge Day 4 - Indie Game The Movie

 photo IndieGameTheMove_zps4b1ca257.jpg
This captivating documentary follows several indie game designers as they painstakingly develop their games and hope for breakthrough success.

This film documents the dizzying highs and the soul crushing depressing lows that independent game developers go through to get their games out and accepted by the public.

Braid developer Jonathan Blow goes on about how even tho Braid was a massive hit and received widespread critical acclaim he felt that people just didn't get the underlying message and the games themes and goes off on one at people through forum comments trying to set them straight and slowly becomes a bit of a inter joke by doing so.

Super Meat Boy developers Team Meat (Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes)want to make a game that brought back their own childhood gaming experiences. While in development they get invited to take part in a Xbox Live Arcade promotion called "Game Feast but the problem s they they are given a month to get the game finished and doing to puts a hell of a lot of pressure on the pair and effects their life's (marriage problems and social issues). They manage to get the game done in time but when it comes to release day the game is not found in the market place to start off with but that all changes later in the day and when it does the sales go through the roof and sells over 20,000 units in the first 24 hours and becomes an instant fan favourite.

Fez developer Polytron (Phil Fish and Renaud Bédard) have taken 4 years to get Fez to where it is and its even been remade 3 times! They set off to show the game at PAX but have a possible lawsuit looming overhead (Fish's ex work partner Jason DeGroot was yet to sign his side of the final separation deal and not doing so would stop them from showing the game). They set up the kiosk but at hit with yet another problem with the game, they did some last minute work on the game the night before but had inadvertently set some game breaking glitches right at the start of the game!

I had seen some reviews of this film and didn't really give it much of a second thought but I am glad I did. If you love the games in the Xbox Live Arcade and want to see the blood, sweat and tears that go into them then get watching this.

One problem I had with this.......after watching it I now NEED the 3 games! DAMN YOU INDIE GAME THE MOVIE!!

Netflix Challenge Day 3 - Pumping Iron

 photo PumpingIron_zpsb365acb5.jpg
Starring five-time Mr. Olympia winner -- and future movie star and California governor -- Arnold Schwarzenegger, this pivotal 1977 independent documentary follows the then 28-year-old bodybuilder's progress as he competes for his sixth title.

I first heard about this docufiction film about 10 years ago from a friends younger brother who had just started bodybuilding and he idolised Arnold Schwarzenegger, we started watching it as a joke with all the silly one liners but we slowly but surely fell in love with the friendship and camaraderie.

The film introduces bodybuilders Mike Katz, Ken Waller, Franco Columbu, Lou Ferrigno and of cause Arnold Schwarzenegger as they all prepare themselves for the for the upcoming 1975 Mr. Universe amateur competition and Mr. Olympia professional competition in South Africa.

It quickly goes over the small rivalry between Katz and Waller while they prep for Mr. Universe (Waller turns into a cheeky scamp and nicks Katz's t-shirt) then shows Columbu who is the only one of the group to be under 6 ft and weigh less then 200 lbs as he trounces his opponents in the 200 lbs Mr. Olympia division. Most of the films is targeted on Ferrigno and Schwarzenegger as the fight it out in their division.

Ferrigno is a giant of a man at 6 ft 5 in and weighing in at 285 lbs and was training in a small dark gym in Brooklyn while he dad who was some what overbearing at times (at one point he said THEY will win) and spurred Ferrigno on with his training by reminding him of Schwarzenegger to get them last few reps in.

Schwarzenegger on the other hand was smaller at "only" 6 ft 2 in and 250 lbs but was training in a nice light and airy gym surrounded by other bodybuilders and had in my opinion much better equipment.

After much joking and posing in various small swimming trunks to comes down to the pose off, now even tho Ferrigno is much MUCH bigger then Schwarzenegger he narrowly misses out due to Schwarzenegger being more defined.

If you are into docufiction films and the gym then get it watched.

I would recommend Pumping Iron for fans of sport documentaries.

Netflix Challenge Day 2 - The Blair Witch Project

 photo The-Blair-Witch-Project_zps2f34a263.jpeg

Three student filmmakers march into the woods to make a documentary about a fabled witch credited with a string of murders dating back 200 years.

This is one of the most popular "found footage" films (The first one was Cannibal Holocaust) that kickstarted tho whole genre and was the first to be a Box Office hit.

Its all filmed with hand-held cameras to give it the low budget student feel but I thought it also helped give the feeling of fear due to only using the lights on the camera to light up the woods at night. You get to see the trio go from friends laughing and joking at the start slowly change to people on the verge of a breakdown. The lack of background music also helps build up the tension at night as you can hear everything like the characters breathing and the wind blowing through the trees.

At times it can feel like it is dragging on when they are just walking around in the woods but it all builds up, piles of rocks, things hanging in the trees, the fear of being followed, tents being attacked, I don't know if its just me but if you were to sit there and take it all in it can feel like you are right there with them.

This film helped push me into being a fan of "found footage" films because back in 1999 me and my friends got caught up in the hype from the reports of people running out of the cinemas in floods of tears through to the news reports saying it should of been banned and/or shown with a warning at the start and its safe to say that it lived up to all the hype! This is silly but it had a personal feel for us as there are some woods close to where we all grew up that had 2 old abandoned houses and of cause there were silly rumours of ghosts and witches that lived in and around them.

If you have never seen it then get it watched ASAP!

I would recommend The Blair Witch Project for fans of the Paranormal Activity series.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Limited Edition

 photo MetalGear2_zps6452c824.jpg

This is a bit late up but here is my review of the Zavvi exclusive Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Limited Edition.

How I have never been a fan of the Metal Gear games, don't get me wrong I have tried them but I just couldn't get to grips with them.......but throw everything you know about the games out the window as this is more like Devil May Cry then the older Metal Gear games.

 photo MetalGear3_zpsed8220f3.jpg

The figure was in the box but I got a bit ahead of myself and unpacked it before taking a picture *oops*

 photo MetalGear1_zps4fefc57a.jpg

As you can see the figure is stunning, the detail is mind blowing! It comes with 2 pairs of hands to grip different things, 2 pairs of feet (in game Raiden uses his feet with his sword), a changeable faceplate, his sword, large knife and a set of daggers.

The figure is from the Play Arts Kai collection, I had never heard of them before but since seeing them I know one thing and that's I need more of them!

The game itself got me hooked as I am not really the sneaky kind of player and love to go running in and taking things head on. The game play was something different for me as I am more of a FPS gamer and don't really go for hack and slash games but it was really easy to pick up but hard to master.

Revengeance does start off easy teaching you the controls and how to block but I found that it got hard quite fast but that didn't make me enjoy the game any less, if anything is spurred me on to keep at it and get past the boss fights.

The music is something else, it doesn't try to take over but slowly builds up in the background and gets the blood pumping, I have even found myself bopping along to them while trying to get my combo higher and higher.

So if you want a game to get the heart beating fast and make you angry (in a good way) then go out and but this NOW!

Netflix Challenge Day 1 - 1984

 photo 1984_zps0583316e.jpg

This movie adaptation of George Orwell's novel follows the "reeducation" of two people who break the law in a totalitarian state by falling in love.

I have been trying to find a reason to watch this and thought my Netflix Challenge would be the perfect time to start. I went into this only knowing little bits and bobs about it from what I have heard through pop culture and the whole "Big Brother Is Watching You".

First off I am glad I picked this one to start off as I have a love for most things that have hints of dystopia and totalitarianism, I know its weird but I do find it entertaining to watch people feeling lost and oppressed (In Films/TV/Games and NOT in real life).

I just loved everything about this film from the bleak way it was filmed through to the soundscapes and the costumes and how the film does now look dated what so ever, most films from the late 70's and early 80's that are set in the not so distant future tend to use plastic sets and bright colours to give a futuristic feeling where as 1984 uses burnt out and run down buildings filled with dust and rubble.

All I have to say is that if you want to watch an amazing piece of cinematography then get aside 2 hours and watch this.

I would recommend 1984 to fans of  V For Vendetta and even Equilibrium.

Netflix Challenge

 photo Netflix_zpsf43230a0.png

So I have decided that starting on 08/05/2013 I will be doing a Netflix challenge, in other words I will be watching and reviewing a random film each day over the next 4 weeks. If there is anything you want to me watch/endure then just let me know in the comments or over on my Twitter.

Unemployment = Grumpy

 photo Grumpy_zps449daf0d.jpg

Well this blog post is very different to the others, its going to be more of a personal post/rant about my struggles in getting a job.

So here I am, I have been unemployed for 8 months now and it is starting to get to me, don't get me wrong tho because I have been looking for work, applying for jobs but its hard.......really hard! I apply for about 5 a week and I'm lucky to get a reply of any sort and 99% of the time if I do get anything back its an email saying sorry but I have been unsuccessful this time.

I know what some people will be saying 'there is work out there' and yes they are correct, I could go and work through one of the many agencies in this town but I have had some bad experiences with them (they are the reasons I am unemployed) lets just say that you can not count there being a shift at the factory when you get there. I know there there are some jobs out there but I don't have a driving licence and I'm not a doctor or nurse and I don't have a degree for some random job.

Like I said before I have been unemployed for 8 months and it is starting to get to me, I have lost all the get up and go I used to have, I feel like there is no point in doing much and I have started to get really angry and frustrated with anything and everything.

I would like to point out that I am not one of the unemployed who want to be on the dole, I want to work, I hate having nothing to do with my day, having nothing to do for 8 months has started to depress me. Anyways I don't like cheap cider and tracksuits......that lifestyle just doesn't suit me. Haha.

I count myself as one of the lucky ones because if I didn't have Emily then I would be a complete wreck by now.
